The call of the Holy Spirit

richard roberts (3)

And so for about two or three years we sat under another ministry to receive the teaching of the new gift we received so that today we   …………….  Then we began to understand people like Oral Roberts and now what you are doing.   People will not understand your ministry, the ministry of Richard Roberts or Oral  Roberts, unless they have the understanding of the things of the Spirit.

RR:  Well, like how can someone who does not  know  God  understand the things of God?  It’s impossible.

MT:  That’s right.  It’s their foolishness unto  him,  but  they’re only a prayer away from understanding, you know, by saying, “Jesus, I receive you as my personal Savior.”  And when he comes into  your life, the life begins, the ……….. begins to flow, there  is  a light that begins to come on in your spirit and you begin  to  have an understanding because I Corinthians 1:30 says, “He’s  been  made unto us all wisdom.”

BT:  I’ll tell you, knowing life like I know it now  and  being  on this side of the gifts of God,  I  would  not  even  want  to  live without the call of the Holy Spirit because it  literally  was  the turning point in our whole life and ministry.

RR:  You mean you would not go back where you were?

BT:  I would not go back.  I would never go back.

RR:  Neither would I.  I was filled with the Holy Spirit right here on this campus.  Now I had given my life to Jesus but I had not released the prayer language.  The Holy Spirit was in me.  He comes in … the only way you get born again  is  that  the  Holy  Spirit bears witness to your spirit … but later that night there  was  a group of young men across the hall praying in tongues and I  walked in and said, “What are you doing?”  I knew  what  they  were  doing because I’d heard my parents pray in tongues,  you  see.  But  that night I released my prayer language, I began to  pray  in  tongues.

Receive the gift of the Holy Spirit

Remember, too, “well favoured, and skillful in all wisdom.”   This was the number one thing that Solomon prayed for when God said, “Ask what I should do for you.” Now I believe that should be on the top of our list.  Whatever you’re involved in, ask God for his wisdom.   Fourthly, “cunning in knowledge,   and   understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king’s palace.”  You may be a good athlete but find out the scientific measures, find out the mathematical measures, and you will find that those scientific and mathematical figures will do you more good in the long run than all the physical abilities that you have. And Daniel stood in this.  In fact, verse 17  says  they  were  ten times wiser.

BT:  I remember even growing up in  our  early  ministry  when  the phrase “being filled with the Spirit” or  “do  you  have  the  Holy Ghost or the Holy Spirit?”… when I would hear that I was  like  a lot of other Christians, feeling like most of the people  that  had that gift was unlearned.  And so often it seemed  like  the  people that had the gifts, the miracles, and  the  signs  that  the  Bible talked about was unlearned, uneducated, unskillful, they  were  with blemish.  And so what God has done is he’s done a flip-flop.  He’s raising up people now that the devil cannot use that lie.  He’s raising up people that have no blemish, he’s raising up people that have favor, have knowledge,  and  are  skillful  in  all  manner  of learning so that the devil cannot go to a young boy or  young  girl and say, “Would you like to receive the gift of the  Holy  Spirit?” and they would look at you and say, “Well, what good is  that  gift going to do me?”  People have had the gift but they  did  not  have the teaching to go with the gift.  It’s unlimited what we  have  in this Bible, but unless you have somebody that knows how to  explain and tell you, “What is receiving God into my life and receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit going to  do  for  me  other  than  just saying words?” he’s saying emotions, you know.   When  we  received the baptism of the Holy Spirit in 1976, we didn’t know what we had. We had an army within our being and didn’t  realize  it.   But  God told us … he spoke to our spirit and he said, “You  need  to  sit under the teaching of somebody else that’s been  more  mature  than you, they have more experience and know what you’ve just received.”

As a child of God

And when we got Spirit filled, I desired to know more about the things of God.  I no longer accepted the excuse that the Bible is a hard book to read and nobody can understand it.   But  it  was something … it’s like a  baby,  it’s  like  a  woman  when  she’s pregnant.  She  knows  she’s  pregnant,  her  husband  knows  she’s pregnant, her doctor knows  she’s  pregnant,  and  when  she  tells somebody else they say, “Well, you don’t look pregnant.”   But you know that seed is within you. So what she does is she  takes  that seed and she begins to feed that seed and nourish that seed and she cherishes that seed.   And in nine months  that  seed  comes  to maturity in the form of a baby.

RR:  And then everybody knows she’s pregnant.

BT:  Everybody knows then.

MT:  There’s a man now, not only from heaven, but  from  earth,  to produce, to produce that child vision so that it can be seen.   And God wants to … you see, God knows that the natural mind walks  by sight.  He wants to start producing the kind of miracle that  is  a notable miracle in your life as a child of God so that  there  will be no doubt that God has done it.  In the days of Daniel,  who  was such an intercessor, there was an order that came  fort0h  from  the king … I just want to read this order because I  think  it  shows something about ORU and what you’re doing as well as  what  God  is calling upon our life.  The king, in Daniel 1, verse  3,  “And  the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of the eunuchs, that he  should bring forth certain of the children of Israel, and  of  the  king’s seed, and of the princes.”   Now  look  at  the  job  requirements.

“Children in whom was no blemish.”  So we always share with people, package yourself well, sell yourself well, package  yourself  well.

The Ministry of seed-faith

MT:  That’s why you’re molding and shaping generations and it’s far beyond.  One vision obeyed upon and  acted  upon  ignites  so  many other visions that you never know about.  We remember  in  our  own personal life as we begin to think  about  how  this  ministry  has affected our own personal life.  In 1971 we  began  to  tithe,  but then it  was  in  1976  before  we  heard  about  the  ministry  of seed-faith.  And Genesis 8:22 says, “As long as the earth remains, there is going to be a time of seedtime and harvest  time.”   Well, in the teaching of seed-faith brought us into a realm of excellence that we had not known about before.  We began …  we  didn’t  know that miracles …  you  could  attract  miracles  by  seeding  into another life.

RR:  I like that.  You didn’t know you could attract miracles.

RR:  I like that.

BT:  We heard people all our life, because we were black people in traditional settings, and so that was all we knew.  So  the  things we were  anticipating  or  hoping  for  were  centered  around  our environment.  But as we were focusing on the Oral Roberts   program at that time and miracles and seed-faith, God began to deal with our heart and we began to plant seeds.  We started in 1971  giving tithes and offerings.  My husband … we had become Spirit  filled in 1976 and we desired more of the Word of God like  we  had  never desired before.  And that’s one true sign  of  being  full  of  the Spirit of God as you will  desire  the  spiritual  things,  because after I had completed college, I worked so hard in  college  trying to be a Who’s Who and an A student that by the time I completed it, I was burned out.  I didn’t want to see another book let alone the Bible.

The Last Supper

We are told in Matthew 26:20-29 NKJV that on the last night of Jesus’ earthly life, He gathered His disciples together.  As they were eating their meal, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, saying, “Take, eat; this is My body.”  Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying. . . .  “This is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins” (vv. 26-28).

Jesus knew that in just a matter of hours, He would go to Calvary, where He would be beaten, spat upon, and mocked.  He knew His blood was going to flow from the crown of thorns, from the thirty-nine stripes on His back, from the nails, and from the spear that would be thrust into His side.  Every one of those thirty-nine stripes represented our healing.  He knew that His body would be broken and His blood would be shed—sacrificed so that we might be whole.

Things looked mighty bad that Friday and Saturday two thousand years ago when Jesus hung on the Cross, when His lifeless body was put into the tomb, and when the stone was rolled over the door.  But Sunday was coming.  Sundays symbolizes resurrection.  On that glorious Sunday, Christ was resurrected to take His place at the right hand of God where He intercedes for you and me.

I believe that just as Jesus was resurrected from the dead, the things in your life that seem dead can be resurrected—dreams, visions, the things that you know God has given you to do, but it seems there is no way that they can come to pass. I’m praying and trusting God for those things to be resurrected and restored to you.
