The hall praying in tongues by Richard Roberts

Well, how could I possibly speak in an unknown language that I never learned?  My mind tells me that it’s impossible.  Well, let me go back to the night I was saved.  When I gave my heart to Christ, I came back to the dormitory, because I got saved in my mother and dad’s home, I came back to the dormitory that night.  And there were a group of guys who were across the hall praying in tongues.

Now I knew what they were doing because I’d heard my mother and dad pray in tongues.  And I was raised in a charismatic church.  I just never experienced it myself.  These guys were across the hall in EMR on the fourth floor having a prayer meeting, and they were praying in tongues.  I could hear them in there.  And I knew that none of them were speaking in a known tongue.

Because, I mean, if someone is speaking Spanish, you can say, “Hey, okay, I recognize that’s Spanish or French or some earthly language.”  But you could tell they were not speaking in a known tongue, you know.

So I went into the room, and I said, “What are you doing?”  Well, I knew what they were doing.  But I didn’t know what else to say.  “What are you doing?”

“We’re praying in tongues.  Would you like to pray in tongues?”

“Yes.  How do I do it?” I said.

They said, “You just start with us.”

“Well, how can I start with you?  I don’t know the language you’re speaking.”  I didn’t realize how valuable it was.

This one young man said to me, “You start with us, and God, by the Holy Spirit who is in you, will take you right into your own language.”

“Oh, well, how do I do that?”

“Well, you’re going to set your mind aside for a minute.”

“Well, how can I do that?  How can I set my mind aside?”  Because I’ve been controlled by my mind all my life.  But now six hours earlier that day, I’d given my heart to Christ, and now all of a sudden I felt something rolling around down in here.  I didn’t know what was happening.  I didn’t know what I’m teaching you today.
