The apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor and teacher by Richard Roberts

Now close your hands into a fist.  Think of the five offices, the apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor, teacher, think of those five offices in terms of your hand and put your thumb up, okay?  This is a universal signal in any country.  Anywhere in the world, America, Africa, Asia, South America, when you go like this, I mean, everybody knows what you mean.  It’s okay, right?

All right, think of your hand, think of your thumb as being the base of your hand.  Okay.  And think of all the others coming out from your thumb, okay?  The thumb represents the apostle, because it is the foundation of your hand.

Then take your next finger, what we call our forefinger, what people would call the finger that you point with, right?  Okay.  Some people use another fingers to point with, but that’s not the one I’m referring to, you know.

Now hold your thumb up like this, and notice how you can point this way, right?  Point at me like this, you see.  All right, this finger represents the prophet pointing the way.  You got that?  Students, don’t ever forget this.  This is one of the greatest illustrations you’ll ever understand about the fivefold ministry.

So you have the base of your hand, your thumb, representing the apostle, the trailblazer, okay, the one like the apostle Paul, the one who sets the course and others follow.  Next the office of the prophet, who points the way.  Every king in the Bible had a prophet.  Where did we lose that?  You know, when did we give up on that?

I mean, Hezekiah had a prophet.  David had a prophet.  Solomon had a prophet.  Jeroboam, Rehoboam, all the kings of Israel had a prophet who spoke into their lives.

There’s a man here on campus, and some of you will know him, his name is Dr. Frank Hultgren.  He’s the silver-haired six foot five Australian, who is sitting on the front row.  He’s had a prophetic ministry for many, many, many years.
